Here are some of her answers when I interviewed her:
1. Can you please describe a brief background about yourself as a photographer?
I am Samantha Camara. The owner and photographer of Beyond The Willow Photography. I opened the studio at the end of 2023. I’ve always loved photography and have been capturing moments since I can remember. I was given a basic film camera at a younger age and haven’t stopped taking pictures since. It’s evolved over the years from film photography to digital. I've always been the person with the camera taking pictures of everyone.
2. Can you please list an overview of your work and achievements?
I started out just offering mini sessions and now do full life photography including, family sessions, head shots, all sorts of events and now even mobile services.
3. What inspired you to become a photographer?
I feel like photography is a great creative outlet and has always been part of my life. Friends and family have always encouraged me to pursue it as a career path. But what actually lead me to doing it professionally, was my two dogs getting sick, within a couple months of each other. Which resulted in expensive vet bills. That got me brain storming on ways I could make some extra income from home and using our property. It all came together organically and I'm so grateful to be able to do something I love for work.
4. Did you have early influences or mentors in photography?
I did have an early influence into photography. I was given a camera at a young age and have always loved it. I would set up my toys and take pictures of them. It became something I really was interested in during High school, I took a few photography courses and learned the basics of film photography! I also took a course at the Dundas Valley School of Art for digital photography. My teacher Barry Gray was a fantastic mentor who had a lot of experience and knowledge to share. I do admire many different photographers and styles, but I think it's very important to find your own style when it comes to anything creative.
5. Are there specific subjects or themes you gravitate toward? Why?
At first it was doing mini displays for families and their animals! I really enjoy creating the sets and playing around with it all. I would say Fall and Halloween displays are my favourite! But as I have progressed and added to the studio, I enjoy playing with lighting and backdrops. And of course, sharing our beautiful natural back drops on the property, it's something I get great enjoyment out of.
6. What are some of the biggest challenges you face as a photographer?
Honestly as someone who recently entering the photography world professionally, you really realize that it is a very over saturated market and it’s easy to compare yourself to others. Everyone knows a photographer or at the very least owns a camera. So being authentic and producing good work, is so important in building your client base.
7. What camera and gear do you currently use, and why?
I have a cannon sx 540 hs - it’s incredible for zoom pictures especially of the moon.
And a Nikon d5100 with different lenses, this is my main camera I use.
I also have lighting back drops and many props.
8. Have you exhibited your work? If so, what was that experience like?
I have not yet. But it is something I aspire to and will do in the near future.
9. What advice would you give to aspiring photographers looking to make a career out of it?
Stay true to yourself and always be willing to learn. Take courses, watch you tube videos, listen to constructive criticism. Practice. There is an infinite amount of information available these days.
Don’t compare yourself to others. Everyone’s journeys different and if you stay true to yourself and focus on producing good work. It will all line up. But you do have to put in the work and it can take a while and it will be hard at times. Things won’t just fall into your lap, so you do have to put in the work.
And finally, always believe in yourself and don’t give up during the hard times.
10. Can you share a quote or mantra that inspires you in your work?
Sometimes you never know the true value of a moment until it becomes a memory.
-Dr. Seuss
I like this one because I feel like memories are captured in photographs.
